Abuja, Nigeria - A coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has formally submitted an application to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register a new political party—the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).

The application, dated June 19 and acknowledged by INEC on Friday, signals the coalition’s intent to launch a fresh political platform instead of aligning with existing parties.

Backed by several high-profile political figures—including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and League of Northern Democrats convener Umar Ardo—the new party aims to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s political dominance ahead of the next general elections.

The coalition, under the banner of the National Opposition Coalition Group, submitted required documents such as the party’s constitution, manifesto, official logo, and minutes from foundational meetings.

In a letter jointly signed by Chief Akin A. Rickets (Protem National Chairman) and Abdullahi Elayo (Protem National Secretary), the group stated:

“We respectfully write to the Independent National Electoral Commission, requesting the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance, as a political party... The name of the party shall be All Democratic Alliance, with ADA as our acronym and ‘Justice for All’ as our slogan.”

The party’s proposed symbol features a maize plant—chosen to represent abundance, resilience, and sustenance.

This move ends weeks of speculation over whether the coalition would revive an existing platform or form a new one entirely.

The registration request comes just days after INEC cautioned political groups that party formation must follow strict constitutional and electoral procedures. The commission reaffirmed that pressure or public opinion will not override compliance with the law.

If approved, the All Democratic Alliance would add a new layer to Nigeria’s shifting political landscape as opposition forces regroup ahead of the 2027 elections.
