Los Angeles, USA - Tensions flared in downtown Los Angeles as riot police and protesters clashed on Friday evening, following a wave of federal immigration raids that saw dozens detained across the city.

Demonstrators took to the streets after reports emerged that federal agents, under the Department of Homeland Security, had conducted coordinated operations targeting individuals suspected of residing in the United States without legal documentation.

According to a Homeland Security Investigations spokesperson, the raids were part of an operation to execute search warrants related to the alleged harbouring of undocumented individuals. Authorities have not confirmed the number of arrests made, but eyewitnesses and local media reported multiple detentions.

Footage from the scene showed armed federal agents using unmarked vehicles to detain individuals in full view of growing crowds—images that quickly spread across social media, fueling outrage.

As protests swelled near the site of the raids, Los Angeles police declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, warning demonstrators to disperse. When many refused, riot police advanced with batons and tear gas launchers in hand. Confrontations followed, although the extent of injuries or arrests remains unclear.

Mounting Anger Over Immigration Policy

The raids have reignited long-standing anger over immigration enforcement tactics in the U.S., particularly in cities with large immigrant populations. Los Angeles, a self-declared sanctuary city, has frequently clashed with federal authorities over immigration raids that activists argue target vulnerable communities and sow fear among residents.

Community leaders condemned the timing and visibility of the raids, saying they were designed to intimidate.

“These tactics are meant to send a message—and the message is fear,” said one local organizer on the ground.

Friday’s scenes echo similar incidents during previous immigration crackdowns in U.S. cities, where unmarked vehicles and heavily armed agents were used to detain individuals, often without immediate transparency or legal clarity.

No Official Numbers Yet Released

While federal officials maintain that the operation was lawful and focused on individuals “harbouring undocumented persons,” critics argue the use of force and lack of clear communication only deepens mistrust in law enforcement and the federal government’s immigration agenda.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed it assisted with crowd control but stated it was not involved in the immigration raids themselves.

As investigations continue and public pressure mounts, civil rights organizations are calling for a full review of the operation and the conduct of both federal and local law enforcement agencies during the crackdown.
