In a world where social media can crown kings and cancel them within minutes, Grammy-winner Burna Boy often finds himself caught between praise and pushback. But Nigerian DJ and media personality DJ Obi is setting the record straight: you don’t know Burna like that.
Speaking candidly during a recent podcast appearance, DJ Obi peeled back the digital curtain on the man behind the headlines, calling Burna Boy “a blessing” and “a great person” who is often misunderstood by the public due to his online antics.
“He’s such a blessing in my life,” Obi said. “But most people only know him through the noise. They don’t get to see the heart behind the brand.”
According to Obi, the image many associate with Burna Boy—fiery tweets, controversial interviews, and the take-no-prisoners confidence—is just one slice of the Afrofusion star’s persona. The real Burna, he insists, is grounded, kind-hearted, and fiercely loyal to those around him.
“He’s a man that knows exactly what he wants. If you don’t disrespect him, he won’t disrespect you,” Obi said, adding that Burna is deeply cherished by those in his inner circle.
But Obi also didn’t deny that Burna sometimes plays into the public drama. In fact, he suggested that Burna enjoys the chaos on social platforms—what many fans now consider part of his African Giant persona.
“He enjoys the attention. The online drama, the tweets, the clapbacks—he finds some thrill in it,” Obi laughed. “But that’s not all there is to him.”
DJ Obi argued that Burna rarely gets the platform to express himself without being baited into controversy by the media.
“People only ask him questions that poke the bear,” he explained. “They don’t ask him about who he is, or what drives him as a man.”
For Obi, who’s shared personal moments and one-on-one time with Burna, the public doesn’t even get to experience 10% of the real man. And perhaps, he added, that’s a good thing.
“Maybe that’s what makes it special,” he reflected. “Not everyone is meant to experience Burna that way.”
While fans and critics continue to debate Burna Boy’s online behavior, DJ Obi’s message is clear: the African Giant is more than a headline. He's a layered individual—one who won’t change just to make people comfortable.
