After a public digital brawl that had both tech bros and political junkies glued to their screens, Elon Musk has dialed things back, admitting he may have crossed the line in his recent war of words with President Donald Trump.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Tesla and SpaceX boss struck a surprisingly humble tone:

“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far.”

This climbdown marks the latest twist in what was once an unusually cozy alliance between two of the world’s most polarizing figures — the billionaire disruptor and the populist president.

Until just days ago, Musk served as a close confidant of Trump, even co-leading the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency — a role that saw him cheerlead mass federal layoffs under the banner of “lean government.” But the bromance came crashing down when Musk publicly torched Trump’s tax cut and domestic policy bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination.”

That sparked a fiery exchange online, as Musk unearthed old quotes from Trump and GOP leaders bemoaning budget deficits — accusing them of hypocrisy in light of the bill’s anticipated cost to U.S. finances.

But it was Musk’s most explosive claim — alleging Trump’s name appears in Jeffrey Epstein’s secret files — that truly set the internet on fire. Musk provided zero evidence to support the statement, and legal experts quickly clarified: being named in sealed documents doesn’t imply guilt or wrongdoing.

Still, the damage was done. Trump fired back on Truth Social, threatening to cut off government contracts and subsidies to Musk’s companies. Speaking to CNN later, Trump dismissed Musk with a frosty:

“I’m not even thinking about Elon. Not for a while.”

In a separate podcast appearance, Trump admitted he was “disappointed” by Musk’s attacks, though he insisted there were “no hard feelings.”

“I don’t know what his problem is… I haven’t thought too much about him in a while,” he told Pod Force One.

Despite the scorched-earth energy of the week, Musk has since entered what looks like a cooling-off phase. He quietly deleted several inflammatory posts — including the Epstein bombshell and one suggesting Trump should be impeached. Instead, he’s endorsed billionaire investor Bill Ackman’s call for peace, replying “Not wrong” to a tweet urging reconciliation.

And in a move that hints at residual alignment, Musk appeared to support the Trump administration’s hardline stance on immigration protests in L.A., responding with American flag emojis to a post by VP JD Vance.

So, what changed?

Some point to comments made by Musk’s estranged father, Errol Musk, in a Russian interview over the weekend. Errol didn’t mince words:

“Trump will prevail. He is the president,”
adding that Elon had “made a mistake” and predicting the drama would blow over quickly.
“It’s just a small thing. It will be over tomorrow.”

Whether that prophecy holds remains to be seen. But for now, it seems Musk is backpedaling from a battle he may not be ready to win — especially against a man who never forgets a slight.

As always in the world of the ultra-rich and ultra-powerful, there are no permanent enemies — just temporary glitches in the system.
