Tehran - Iran’s judiciary has accused Israel of carrying out a deadly airstrike on Tehran’s infamous Evin prison during the recent 12-day conflict, claiming the attack killed at least 71 people—including inmates, prison staff, and civilians.

The strike reportedly hit Evin’s administrative section last Monday as part of Israel’s broader bombardment campaign that began on June 13 and ended with a ceasefire days ago.

“According to official figures, 71 people were killed in the attack on Evin prison,” judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir said Sunday.

Victims included guards, administrative staff, visiting family members, detainees, and nearby residents. Evin—long accused by rights groups of housing political prisoners and foreign nationals under harsh conditions—was left partially in ruins.

Photos released by Iran’s judiciary show scenes of devastation: shattered walls, caved-in ceilings, and debris strewn across waiting rooms and corridors. Authorities said the prison’s medical center and visitor areas were directly targeted.

The next day, Iranian officials announced the transfer of inmates from the facility, though they did not disclose how many or where they were taken. Among those previously held in Evin are Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi and several foreign nationals, including French citizens.

Israel has not publicly commented on the strike, but the attack—if confirmed—would mark a major escalation in targeting strategy, striking a high-security detention facility inside the Iranian capital.

The international community has yet to verify Iran’s claims, but the reported death toll underscores the human cost of the recent spike in hostilities between two of the region’s most entrenched adversaries.
