Hollywood star Keanu Reeves made an unexpected – but wildly entertaining – cameo at the 2025 Tony Awards during Broadway star Jonathan Groff’s vibrant performance of “Mack the Knife.”

Groff, dressed in a dazzling tuxedo, lit up the stage with his high-energy number from Just In Time, a Tony-nominated musical in which he plays legendary crooner Bobby Darin. But it wasn’t just the singing that had the crowd buzzing — it was a bold moment of audience interaction that brought the house down.

Mid-performance, Groff leapt off stage and into the audience, heading straight for Reeves, who was seated near the front. In a surprising move that blended theater with playful mischief, Groff climbed onto Reeves’ chair, balancing himself with one foot on each armrest, straddling the John Wick actor as he belted out his lines.

Reeves, ever the good sport, embraced the moment — flashing wide eyes at the camera, grinning, pumping his fists, and even throwing up rock ‘n’ roll hand signs as Groff playfully caressed his chest and face in tune with the performance.

The moment was theatrical magic — blending Broadway flair with Hollywood charisma. When the performance ended, Reeves stood up to cheer and applaud Groff, who later returned to the stage for a Hamilton reunion alongside the original cast, marking their first joint appearance since the musical’s final bow in 2016.

Just in Time received six Tony nominations this year, including a nod for Groff in the Best Actor in a Musical category. Though he ultimately lost to Darren Criss (Maybe Happy Ending), Groff’s presence was undeniable. The multi-talented actor now has four Tony nominations to his name and one win for Merrily We Roll Along.

Meanwhile, Keanu Reeves, who will soon hit the stage in a revival of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot with longtime collaborator Alex Winter, reminded fans that whether in film or on a Broadway stage (intentionally or not), he’s still got it.
