Lagos, Nigeria – Nigerian Afropop sensation Mayorkun has made a bold return to the music scene with the release of his highly anticipated third studio album, Still The Mayor—a project that signals both continuity and evolution in the artist’s musical journey.

Released in the early hours of Friday across major streaming platforms, the 12-track album arrives after a quiet first half of the year for the singer, marking his re-entry into the limelight after months spent largely off the public radar.

The announcement came via his official X (formerly Twitter) account late Thursday, where he wrote: “Still The Mayor arrives at midnight! Big ups to everyone who worked on this project with me. It’s a special one for many reasons.”

Featuring heavyweight collaborations with Fireboy DML, Davido, Gyakie, Rotimi, King Promise, and Olivetheboy, the project spans a wide sonic palette rooted in Afrobeats, yet infused with elements of highlife, R&B, and urban soul. Fireboy DML features twice, with their chemistry already generating chatter online.

Standout tracks such as Lose Control with Ghanaian star King Promise, Therapist featuring Fireboy, and the introspective solo track Under The Canopy have begun to trend across social media platforms, sparking excitement among fans across West Africa and the diaspora.

Initially scheduled for May 2, Still The Mayor was delayed without explanation—adding to anticipation for the follow-up to 2021’s Back In Office. It also builds on the legacy of his breakout debut, The Mayor of Lagos (2018), a record that helped establish Mayorkun as one of Nigeria’s most bankable hitmakers.

In a recent interview with Ghana’s 3MUSIC TV, Mayorkun opened up about the emotional weight behind this latest body of work: “It’s still me, still the Mayor. But this time, I had more to say, more to express. Life’s been happening, and the music reflects that.”

From Lagos to Accra and London, early reviews point to an album that balances personal storytelling with club-ready bangers—a formula that has become a hallmark of Mayorkun’s appeal.

The project’s rollout also coincides with a growing trend in Afrobeats, where artists are leaning into more mature themes and diverse production styles. Industry insiders suggest that Still The Mayor could be Mayorkun’s most globally resonant project to date, especially with its blend of pan-African collaborations.

Mayorkun first rose to fame under Davido’s DMW imprint in 2016 with the viral hit Eleko, and has since carved out a space defined by consistency, charisma, and an ability to evolve with the times.

As streaming numbers roll in and playlists update across platforms, Still The Mayor is already shaping up to be one of 2025’s standout Afrobeats releases.
