Former First Lady Michelle Obama has spoken candidly about her eldest daughter Malia’s decision to change her professional name, revealing it was part of a conscious effort to step out of the shadow of their famous family.

In a heartfelt conversation with Kate and Oliver Hudson on their Sibling Revelry podcast, Michelle shared how both her daughters, Malia and Sasha, have struggled with carving out their own identities while living under intense public scrutiny.

“Our daughters are 26 and 23 now — young adult women. But during their teen years, they went through what I call a ‘push away’ phase,” Michelle explained. “They’re still doing that. It’s something kids of famous parents often go through — trying to distinguish themselves and prove their own worth.”

Michelle emphasized how important it is for her daughters to earn their own success without assumptions that opportunities come easily due to their family name.

“They don’t want people to think they’re just handed things or don’t work hard,” she said. “They’re very sensitive to that. They want to be their own people.”

The former first lady also touched on Malia’s choice to drop the Obama surname professionally. At last year’s Sundance Film Festival, Malia debuted a short film credited simply to “Malia Ann,” using her first and middle names.

“We knew people would still recognize her,” Michelle said. “But we respected her wish to make her own way.”

Malia has been making strides in her creative career, directing a Nike commercial earlier this year and contributing as a writer on the Amazon Prime miniseries Swarm.

Michelle’s reflections offer a glimpse into the ongoing journey of the Obama daughters as they seek to build their own identities beyond the legacy of their parents.
