Veteran Nollywood actor and celebrated broadcaster Patrick Doyle is not here for the glitz, glam, or red carpet praise. In a bold and unfiltered conversation with Tribune, the seasoned thespian made it clear that celebrity culture holds no weight in his life — not when he comes from a lineage of royalty and walks daily in the fullness of self-assurance.
“I don’t live like a star. I don’t live like a celebrity. That’s all I’m going to tell you. It doesn’t mean anything to me,” Doyle said, unapologetically.
The revered screen icon, who has contributed decades of craft to the Nigerian entertainment industry, shared that his value system is rooted in heritage and character — not hype or designer tags.
“The very nature of my antecedents — on my paternal and maternal sides — is royalty. I don’t need any validation from anyone. I’m very arrogant in my head. I know exactly who I am.”
A Voice of Dissent in the Age of Flash and Filters
Doyle didn’t hold back in calling out the culture of excessive consumerism that often defines today’s celebrity lifestyle. While many in showbiz flaunt designer labels, luxury rides, and opulent lifestyles, he says he finds no excitement in such symbols of success.
“The kind of car I drive? If you escort me outside, you’ll understand. It simply gets me from point A to B,” he remarked.
“I’m not going to kill myself to buy the latest Range Rover.”
To Doyle, living beyond one's means for public image leads to a dangerous spiral — one that pushes entertainers into dishonest hustles, accepting jobs with no intention of delivering, or cutting corners to keep up appearances.
“That’s when they become unscrupulous,” he warned.
“They take on jobs, collect deposits, and disappear. All for validation they don’t need.”
Patrick Doyle Says Fame Means Nothing to Him
While dismissing the obsession with brands like Louis Vuitton and Gucci, Doyle was quick to add that modesty doesn’t equal mediocrity. He insists he carries himself with dignity — without the need for flashy labels or status statements.
“I don’t need a Louis Vuitton bag. I don’t need a Gucci suit. But I’m not the worst-dressed person in Nigeria either.”
A Life Beyond Applause
For many fans, Patrick Doyle is a legend. But for Doyle himself, the applause has never been the destination — just a byproduct of his work. From critically acclaimed Nollywood roles to national broadcasting contributions, he has carved a legacy with consistency, not clout.
In a generation where clout often overshadows content, Doyle’s message rings loud and clear: Know who you are, and never measure your worth by how loudly the world claps.
