Abuja, Nigeria – Key figures of Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with top officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting follows INEC’s recent rejection of a formal notice submitted by the PDP for its landmark 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) gathering. According to the electoral body, the communication fell short of procedural requirements and failed to reflect internal stability within the party's ranks.
Specifically, INEC raised concerns over the unresolved leadership crisis surrounding the office of the PDP’s National Secretary, which it cited as a major reason for turning down the party's notification.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who presided over the meeting, reiterated the commission’s stance. He pointed out that the ongoing tussle over the party’s secretaryship has led to procedural inconsistencies, creating a dilemma for the electoral body in terms of official recognition.

Among those present from the PDP side were Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; and the governors of Bauchi, Zamfara, Plateau, and Oyo states.
Details of the closed-door session remain under wraps, but insiders suggest the discussions were aimed at charting a path forward for the PDP amidst mounting internal disputes and preparations ahead of the next election cycle.
