Port Harcourt – A political support group within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), known as Bala Agents’ Mandate, has issued a call to former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, urging them to return to the PDP and work with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed to build a more united and effective opposition.
Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday, the group warned against attempts to form a new opposition coalition, arguing that such a move would only fragment resistance to what they describe as growing authoritarianism in Nigeria.
“We are urging these respected leaders to come back to where they belong — the PDP remains their political home,” said Amadi Chijioke, the Rivers State Coordinator of the group. “Governor Bala Mohammed has demonstrated vision and courage. He needs allies like Obi and Amaechi to rebuild the party and provide the country with a credible alternative.”
The group made it clear that Governor Mohammed should not be left to carry the weight of party leadership alone, especially at a time when Nigeria's democracy, they said, is under stress.
National Coordinator of the group, Habib Musa, reinforced the message, praising the PDP Governors’ Forum under Bala Mohammed’s leadership. He called it the most stable and trustworthy pillar holding the party together amid political uncertainty.
“While some have defected out of fear and convenience, Bala Mohammed and the PDP Governors’ Forum have shown resilience,” Musa said. “The defections of the Delta and Akwa Ibom governors to the APC were not about principles — they were about personal survival.”
Musa also criticized recent political developments in Rivers State and Abuja, accusing the federal government of using state institutions to stifle opposition and democracy. He condemned attempts to shut down the PDP national secretariat and described them as part of a broader pattern of intimidation.
In a pointed message to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike — himself a former PDP governor now serving in the APC-led government — Musa appealed for unity, saying Wike should set aside personal politics and work with Bala Mohammed for the good of the party and the nation.
As Nigeria marks 26 years of democracy, the group emphasized the urgency of restoring democratic values, party discipline, and credible leadership. They said only a reinvigorated PDP can offer Nigerians a meaningful alternative in 2027.
“Now is not the time for fragmentation,” Musa added. “It’s time to rebuild — together.”
