Labour Party leader and former presidential candidate Peter Obi has openly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what he described as an insensitive and flamboyant condolence visit to a grief-stricken community in Benue State.
The community is still reeling from a recent brutal attack that left dozens dead, homes destroyed, and families shattered. While the nation mourns, Obi says the President’s visit looked more like a political campaign rally than a solemn show of solidarity.
“A condolence visit should reflect empathy, compassion, and dignity, not celebration or fanfare,” Obi stated via a post on X. “What we witnessed was a carnival in the midst of tears.”
Obi emphasized the need for genuine leadership that comforts the people, not one that prioritizes optics over substance.
“This is not the time for dancing and grand entrances. It’s the time to listen to victims, comfort survivors, and commit to justice.”
The former Anambra State governor further urged the federal government to take concrete steps to protect vulnerable communities and ensure that such tragedies no longer repeat themselves.
His comments have ignited nationwide debates, especially on social media, where many Nigerians echoed his sentiments, questioning the tone and intention behind the President’s visit.
As security concerns rise and citizens demand accountability, Obi’s remarks have added more pressure on the Tinubu administration to match words with action.
