In a move that’s stirred conversation across Afrobeats circles, music icon Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, famously known as D’Banj, has revealed his current top three Nigerian music artists — and surprisingly, Wizkid didn’t make the cut.
Speaking on the Adesope Live podcast, the Koko Master unapologetically named Rema, Davido, and Burna Boy as the leading figures in Nigeria’s music scene right now. According to D’Banj, each artist earned their spot for distinct and impressive reasons.
“Shout out to Rema. I like his energy,” he said. “Then there is Davido. People should learn from the way he carries himself — like he doesn’t have a penny — yet he’s so consistent. Burna Boy is too intentional; his live shows are amazing.”
The veteran singer praised Rema for his electric stage presence, saluted Davido for his humility and work ethic, and hailed Burna Boy for the precision and power of his performances.
The omission of Wizkid, one of Nigeria’s most globally recognized musical exports, has sparked debate online, with fans wondering if the move was intentional or simply a matter of personal taste.
Interestingly, this moment comes just days after Rema paid homage to D’Banj during his headline show at London’s iconic O2 Arena. The “Calm Down” crooner paused his set to publicly thank D’Banj for his pivotal role in taking Afrobeats to the international stage, particularly the United Kingdom.
“You were one of the first to bring Afrobeats to the UK,” Rema told D’Banj on stage. “You and Don Jazzy held it down. If you never existed, I would have never existed.”
It’s clear that D’Banj’s legacy still echoes loudly within the new generation — even as he uses his voice to spotlight the stars he believes are holding the culture down today.
