The high-stakes trial of music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs is drawing to a dramatic close in a Manhattan federal courtroom, with both the prosecution and defense expected to rest their cases this week. Closing arguments are tentatively scheduled for Thursday.

Combs, 55, faces life in prison if convicted on a range of charges tied to what prosecutors describe as a sprawling criminal enterprise—one that allegedly used bribery, arson, kidnapping, and sex trafficking to maintain control and fulfill his personal desires.

Prosecution Builds Case Around Power, Exploitation, and Control

After seven weeks of explosive testimony, the prosecution has presented its 34th and final witness, tying together text messages, flight records, and witness accounts to build a damning portrait of Combs as the orchestrator of so-called “freak-offs” — drug-fueled, multi-day sexual encounters involving trafficked men and women.

Prosecutors say some of these encounters were filmed, with jurors shown graphic video footage as part of the evidence. Government attorneys also introduced messages and logs they say support claims of organized prostitution and trafficking.

Combs has denied all charges, maintaining that the sexual relationships described in court were consensual.

No Defense Witnesses Expected

In a surprise move, Combs’ legal team signaled on Monday that they do not plan to call any witnesses in his defense. Legal analysts note that this tactic is not unusual and may reflect confidence that cross-examination alone raised enough doubt about the prosecution's case.

Defense lawyers are expected to introduce select exhibits into evidence before formally resting their case.

A Civil Suit That Opened the Floodgates

Much of the momentum behind the current trial can be traced back to a 2023 civil suit filed by singer Cassie Ventura, Combs’ longtime girlfriend. Though the case was settled within 24 hours, it triggered a wave of additional accusations.

Ventura testified during the criminal trial, recounting years of alleged sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. Jurors also saw disturbing surveillance footage of Combs violently assaulting her in a hotel hallway — footage that became public after CNN released it last year.

A hotel security guard took the stand to confirm he was allegedly paid $100,000 in cash by Combs to hand over the original footage.

Jurors Under Pressure as Case Captivates the Public

Despite the gravity of the charges, jurors are not sequestered and are instead given daily reminders not to follow media coverage. That has proven challenging, as the trial has become one of the most widely followed celebrity court cases in recent years, dominating both traditional headlines and social media platforms.

As the case nears its end, all eyes turn to the jury — who now bear the heavy task of determining whether one of the biggest names in global entertainment will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
