Former Big Brother Naija star and media personality, Tacha Akide, has stirred up heavy backlash online after a resurfaced video showed her criticizing the financial realities of Nigerians living in the United Kingdom.

In the viral clip, Tacha boldly claimed that many Nigerians back home wrongly idolize the idea of living abroad, especially in the UK, without understanding the economic challenges people face there. According to her, many Nigerians in the UK are struggling, and the cost of living is far from rosy.

“You see all those people that are always having an inferiority complex in Nigeria, thinking everyone in the UK is rich... let me tell you the truth—most of the broke people I’ve met are in the UK. It’s expensive as f**k,” she said.

Tacha went on to caution Nigerians considering relocation, urging them to drop the fantasy of a glamorous lifestyle abroad.

“It’s not as rosy, sweet and interesting as you think. It’s money—burning money. If you want to move, fine. But don’t do it with the wrong mindset,” she added.

Her comments quickly sparked outrage among UK-based Nigerians and social media users, many of whom found her remarks dismissive and disconnected from reality. Some accused the influencer of generalizing and ignoring the hard work and structure in place abroad.

One user fired back:

“Tacha and careless talk again. People here aren’t as broke as you think. This isn’t Nigeria where politicians throw money around in the name of ‘influencing’.”

Another wrote:

“Because UK guys don’t throw cash anyhow, you think they’re broke? Wait till you see their ISA balances. No be transfer money dem dey flex with here.”

Critics also called out her mode of transport in the UK, with one comment mocking:

“Just imagine someone talking from inside public transport... have you seen your mates in Benz?”

While some agreed with Tacha’s take on the high cost of living in the UK, the tone and delivery of her message were widely criticized for lacking empathy and nuance.

Tacha, known for her blunt opinions and controversial takes, is yet to respond to the backlash as debates around the realities of life abroad continue to flood Nigerian social media spaces.
