A top Iranian official has harshly criticized a recent US nuclear proposal, calling it “incoherent and disjointed,” as the fragile momentum behind nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington appears to be rapidly unraveling.

Despite public assurances by former President Donald Trump that negotiations were nearing a breakthrough, insiders familiar with the closed-door discussions tell WafricNews that optimism is fading, and the next phase of talks is now in serious doubt.

One major shift in the latest US draft involves a dramatic policy reversal on uranium enrichment. For the first time, Washington is proposing to support a multinational consortium—including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and regional powers—that would oversee limited uranium enrichment within Iran for an undefined period. This marks a notable departure from the US’s previous hardline stance, which categorically rejected any enrichment activity on Iranian soil.

Tehran has long maintained that any sustainable agreement must include the right to control and manage its own enrichment capabilities. While Iranian officials have expressed cautious openness to an enrichment consortium, they remain adamant that sovereignty over the program must not be compromised.

Speaking exclusively to WafricNews, a senior Iranian source said the proposal was “highly unrealistic and burdened with excessive demands.”

“The main challenge remains the Americans’ shifting positions,” the official added. “Their inconsistency has derailed progress time and again, and now the situation is more complex than ever.”

According to the Iranian side, the latest draft text put forth by the US contradicts key understandings reached during the fifth round of negotiations held in Rome on May 23.

“The text directly clashes with prior agreements,” the official noted. “Iran’s position on uranium enrichment is non-negotiable and firmly rooted in our national rights.”

Although both sides agreed in Rome to continue discussions “in the near future,” sources say that follow-up talks are now hanging in the balance. With political pressure mounting in both capitals and mutual distrust growing, there is rising concern that the window for a diplomatic breakthrough may soon close.

WafricNews will continue to monitor developments in this high-stakes negotiation as the geopolitical implications extend well beyond the Middle East.
