Liverpool, UK - Liverpool FC captain Virgil van Dijk has shared a heartfelt message of support following a tragic incident during the club's Premier League trophy parade, in which a car ploughed into crowds, injuring dozens of supporters.

The accident occurred on Monday evening as tens of thousands of fans flooded central Liverpool to celebrate the club's league title victory. At least 50 people were injured—including four children—when a vehicle drove through a closed section of Water Street shortly after the official parade bus had passed.

Emergency services confirmed that 27 people were taken to hospitals across the city. Authorities say they are not treating the incident as terror-related. A 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area has since been arrested in connection with the crash.

“We Are With You All” — Van Dijk

In a message posted on social media alongside an image of Liverpool’s iconic Royal Liver Building, Van Dijk wrote:

"My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected. Praying for a speedy recovery for everyone who suffered injuries. We are with you all."

Former manager Jürgen Klopp also extended his sympathy, stating:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected."

City and National Leaders Respond

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram confirmed that at least four people remain in hospital in critical condition, describing them as “very, very ill.”

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also weighed in, offering national support:

"Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with them."

Club legend Sir Kenny Dalglish expressed his shock, saying he was "horrified and deeply saddened" by the events.

Billy Hogan, CEO of Liverpool FC, added:

"This weekend was meant to be one of celebration and joy across the city. What unfolded was unimaginable and appalling. Our hearts go out to all those affected."

Celebration Turns to Tragedy

The Premier League victory parade had drawn fans from across the UK and beyond. Water Street, a key location on the parade route, had been officially closed to traffic. However, eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle involved ignored visible road closure signs and continued into the crowd around 18:00 BST—just ten minutes after the team bus had left the area.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

As the city grapples with the aftermath, messages of support continue to pour in for the victims, their families, and the wider Liverpool community.
