Subversive holiday action flick readies sequel with returning director and promise of more chaotic cheer
Just when it seemed the holiday season couldn’t get any wilder, Violent Night is officially getting a sequel—and the world’s most unorthodox Santa is coming back to the big screen. Universal has confirmed that Violent Night 2 will release globally in December 2026, with David Harbour reprising his gritty, sledgehammer-wielding role, and Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola once again behind the camera.
The first film, released in 2022, was anything but your standard Christmas fare—offering a brash and bloody reimagining of Santa Claus as a hardened loner, rejuvenated by a violent home invasion and the innocence of a young girl named Trudy. It won fans not only for its action-packed sequences but for pushing the boundaries of what a Christmas film could look like in the modern era.
Now, with screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller back on board, Violent Night 2 is gearing up to expand its twisted holiday universe. While plot details remain tightly under wraps, early hints suggest a journey to the North Pole could be on the horizon—along with appearances from Mrs. Claus and Santa’s inner circle of elves.
With production set to begin in Winnipeg this September and a cinematic release locked for 4 December 2026, the sequel promises to deliver more of what fans loved: anarchic holiday chaos, dark humor, and unexpected heart wrapped in explosive set-pieces. The project will again be produced by 87North, the action house behind The Fall Guy and Ballerina—ensuring a high-octane visual feast.
As audiences crave fresh narratives and festive films that subvert tired tropes, Violent Night 2 looks poised to become a new kind of holiday classic—gritty, fearless, and unexpectedly fun.
